Professor Francois Jacob (born 1920),French bacteriologist and Nobel Laureate. Educated at Paris,Jacob started studying surgery. Serious wounds obtained as an army doctor during World War 2 prevented his resuming surgery,so he entered research in biology. Jacob has worked mainly in the genetics of bacteria and bacterial viruses,joining the Institut Pasteur,Paris,in 1950. He shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work on the genetic control of enzyme and viral synthesis,and was made a Professor in 1964.
