Portrait of Sir James H Jeans (1877-1946),British astrophysicist. Jeans was initially trained as a mathematician. He applied his talents to some of the problems in astrophysics. His work on the stability of rotating masses led to a greater understanding of stellar dynamics. Along with Harold Jeffreys,Jeans proposed the 'tidal' model of the formation of the solar system. In this, the gravitational field of a star passing close to the Sun extracted a filament of material, from which all of the planets eventually condensed. This idea held sway for many years, although now replaced by a nebular hypothesis based on that of Laplace | |
