John Hunter. Historical portrait of the British surgeon and anatomist John Hunter (1728-1793). Hunter was born in Scotland and studied surgery in London,England, before serving as a surgeon in Portugal during the Seven Years' War. This experience led to his A Treatise on the Blood,Inflammation and Gunshot Wounds in which he wisely argued that bullets lodged in the body should be left alone unless endangering life. In comparative anatomy his dissections of over 500 animal species and numerous human cadavers led to important findings on blood circulation, teeth, embryology and digestion. Hunter is regarded as the founder of a scientific approach to surgery | |
