Felix Hoppe-Seyler. Ernst Felix Immanuel Hoppe-Seyler (1825-95),German biochemist and discoverer of haemoglobin. As a professor at the universities of Tubingen (1861-72) and Strassburg (1872-95),Hoppe-Seyler pioneered chemical analysis of physiological processes. In 1862 he discovered and named haemoglobin. He showed that haemoglobin was the component in red blood cells which combined with oxygen to carry it around the body. He investigated the chemical composition of the green pigment in plants (chlorophyll) and oxygen activation as the first step in oxidation. He founded the first biochemical journal,Zeitschrift fur physiologische chemie,in 1877 | |
