Professor Anthony Hewish (b.1924),British radio astronomer and Nobel Laureate. Hewish studied physics at Cambridge, and became involved in the design of radio telescopes. In 1967 he and Martin Ryle completed a radio telescope with which he studied the scintillation of quasars - very distant but very bright galaxies. In the course of this work,Hewish and his assistant Jocelyn Bell discovered a regularly-pulsing radio source within our galaxy. This was the first pulsar to be found,a rotating collapsed star which sends out a lighthouse-like beam of radio waves. Hewish and Ryle won the 1974 Nobel Prize for Physics for this work.
