The German physical chemist Fritz Haber,1868-1934. Destined for the family business,Haber found that he preferred chemistry. He gained a professorship at Dahlem Universty near Berlin, and worked on ammonia synthesis. Nitrogen compounds were needed for agricultural fertilisers and for explosives,as natural sources of nitrates were becoming depleted. Haber developed a method of making ammonia by heating atmospheric nitrogen with hydrogen under pressure with an iron catalyst. C. Bosch helped to develop the process to an industrial scale. Haber was in scientific control of Germany's chemical warfare in the First World War. He won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1918 | |
