Portrait of Sir Joseph Hooker (1817-1911),English botanist. Educated in medicine at Glasgow,Hooker served as Assistant Surgeon and Naturalist on Ross's Antarctic expedition of 1839-43. He then travelled widely,visiting India,Palestine and the United States. He published many books from his observations of indigenous plants,the greatest being Flora of British India (1872-97). Later he succeeded his father,Sir William Hooker,as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. He also joined Bentham in producing the immense Genera Plantarum,a seven-volume work on the classification of plants. He was elected president of the Royal Society in 1873 | |
