Engraving of William Herschel,born in Hanover 1738. To avoid military service during the Seven Years War Herschel was smuggled into England where he remained for the rest of his life. He became interested in astronomer & being unable to afford a telescope he set about grinding his own lenses & making telescopes. His sister Caroline aided him in his work & became the first important woman astronomer. In 1781 Herschel discovered Uranus,the first siting of a new planet in historic times.
