W. G. Grace (1848-1915),English cricketer and doctor. William Gilbert Grace is best known as the main populariser of the game of cricket in the late 19th century, but he also maintained a practice in Bristol for 20 years. He combined his two occupations with ease, once staying up all night with a patient before making 221 not out the next day. He was the greatest cricketer of his age, excelling with both the bat and ball. The development of rail travel during his career allowed him to travel widely for matches, and his skill and presence drew large crowds. It is said that "he found cricket a country pastime and left it a national institution" | |
