Francis Glisson. Portrait of Francis Glisson (1597-1677),British physician. Glisson was professor of medicine at Cambridge University and an original Fellow of the Royal Society. With Sydenham and Mayerne,Glisson was one of the great pioneers of clinical medicine in 17th century Britain. In 1654 he gave the first accurate description of the capsule of the liver. In 1650 he gave the best early account of infantile rickets. He also proposed that muscle fibres have an inherent 'irritability' (ability to contract) not dependent on their nerve supply. This was proved a century later by Von Haller | |
