Michael Faraday. Portrait of the British chemist and physicist Michael Faraday (1791-1867). Despite lacking a formal education,Faraday made several major advances in the fields of chemistry,magnetism and electricity. He devised the first electric motor and equipment such as transformers and dynamos. He gave his first Royal Institution lecture when a scheduled speaker failed to appear. It was a great success and his lectures would popularize science amongst the public. He was made professor of chemistry at the Institution in 1833.
