Otto Frisch (1904-1979),Austrian-British physicist. Frisch was educated at Vienna, then worked in Germany. In 1933 he moved to England,a victim of Germany's anti-Jewish laws. In 1939 he visited his aunt,Lise Meitner,in Sweden and heard of Hahn's experiments on neutron bombardment of uranium. Frisch named the process 'nuclear fission',and soon calculated the awesome power of the chain reaction possible with Uranium-235. During 1943-45 he worked on the atomic bomb in the Manhattan Project. Frisch returned to England in 1945,taking the Jackson Chair in Physics at Cambridge from 1947 to 1972. Photographed in the early 1950s | |
