James Dwight Dana (1813-1895),American geologist. Dana graduated from Yale University,USA in 1833. In 1847 he devised the geosynclinal theory of the origin of mountains. This proposed that mountains are formed from compressed and folded deposits of sediment. In 1864 he formulated the "doctrine of permanency",which stated that the continents and oceans retain their outline or form over time. The doctrine was later refuted by plate tectonics. In 1843 Dana reported the "probable occurrence" of the metal gold in California | |
