Crippen and le Neve in the courtroom of Bow Street Magistrates on 30th August 1910. Hawley Harvey Crippen (1862-1910) was an American living in London,England. Ethel le Neve (1883-1967) was his lover. Crippen murdered his wife and he and Ethel fled on the SS Montrose to Canada. Crippen was the first criminal to be caught by use of radio. He was recognised by the ship's captain,who sent a Morse code radio message to Scotland Yard in London. Crippen and le Neve were arrested when they arrived at Montreal. They were tried separately. Crippen's trial took place in Court 1 of the Old Bailey,London,starting on 18 October 1910. It lasted five days. Crippen was convicted of the crime and hanged on 23 November. Le Neve's trial was four days after Crippen's trial. She was found not guilty of being an accessory after the fact | |
