Andre Frederic Cournand (1895-1988),French-US physician,holding cardiac catheterization tubes and syringe. Cournand shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on cardiac catheterization. This involves the use of the thin tubes (catheters) seen here to insert devices into the heart blood vessels to diagnose disease and to treat the diseases. Cournand studied medicine in France,and was a surgeon in World War I. He later worked in the USA,becoming a US citizen in 1941. Photographed in 1957 | |
