Copernicus's De Revolutionibus. Double-page spread of De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Orbs,1543),the book in which astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473- 1543) overturned the prevailing notion that Earth was the centre of the Cosmos. Copernicus argued that the planets of the Solar System followed circular orbits around the Sun. The book was banned by the Church from 1616 to 1835 and is now considered the first of the Age of Science. Notes made by astronomer Erasmus Reinhold (1511-1553) | |
