Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738),Dutch doctor. Boerhaave is considered the founder of modern clinical medicine. He lived and worked in Leiden at the university,where he was professor of botany and medicine,and later chemistry. The tearing of the oesophagus following vigorous vomiting is named Boerhaave's Syndrome after him. He was a contemporary of Linnaeus and Voltaire,both of whom travelled to meet him. Boerhaave became one of the most famous physicians in Europe,and was elected to both the Royal Society of London and the French Academy of Sciences.
