Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922),Scottish speech therapist and inventor of the telephone. Bell followed his father and grandfather into the speech therapy profession,but also studied sound waves and the mechanics of speech. In 1870 he emigrated to Canada,and later became professor of Vocal Physiology at Boston University,USA. There he performed experiments to convert sound waves into electrical impulses for transmission along wires. In 1876 he patented the 'telephone' and founded what became the AT&T Company.
