Sara Branham (centre,1888-1962),US medical researcher, inoculating a mouse to test meningitis serum, while an assistant takes notes. Branham was university educated, but there was very little opportunity in the USA at that time for women to do medical research. It was only by the time of World War One that she obtained her PhD and began research in bacteriology. In 1928,she was appointed to the US National Institutes of Health, and it was there that she did her work on spinal meningitis, combining existing cures with the new sulfonamide drugs.
