Jacques Boucher de Perthes. Portrait of Jacques Boucher de Crevecoeur de Perthes (1788-1868),French archaeologist and paleontologist. In 1837 Boucher de Perthes found flint hand-axes. At first he believed that they were the first axes made by humans after the Great Flood of the bible. Later he found more hand-axes,this time with the remains of extinct animals. This implied that the human remains were much older than previously thought. Boucher de Perthes' conclusions were widely derided when first published but he gradually began to win the academic debate | |
