Sir Joseph Banks. Portrait of English botanist and explorer Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820),who discov- ered hundreds of new species during his 1768 trip around the world with the explorer James Cook. Banks was wealthy enough to indulge a passionate interest in biology. His trip to Australia with Cook led to the discovery of 1400 plants never before classified - many of which were put in the new genus Banksia - and the naming of Botany Bay. Banks returned to England a celebrity. In 1778 he was elected President of the Royal Society,an office he held for 41 years.
