Friedrich Karl Rudolf Bergius (1884-1949),German industrial chemist. His interest in high-pressure reactions of gases began while he was studying under Haber. Realizing that petroleum (crude mineral oil) differs from coal in the higher hydrogen content and lower relative molecular mass of the oil,Bergius developed a method (the Bergius process) for the conversion. He heated a mixture of coal dust and oil with hydrogen under pressure,in the presence of a catalyst; hydrogen was taken up,and the product distilled to give petrol (gasoline). The process was much used by Germany in World War II. Bergius also developed industrial syntheses for phenol & ethane-1,2-diol | |
