Portrait of Charles Best (1899-1978),Canadian physiologist and co-discoverer of insulin. Best graduated at Toronto in 1921. In 1922,as a medical student,he worked with Banting who was trying to isolate a hormone from the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Their work succeeded, also proving the link between the hormone (insulin) and diabetes mellitus. Banting won the 1923 Nobel prize for this work, shared with the laboratory director,J.McLeod. Banting was furious at Best's not being included,so he split the prize money with him. Best went on to direct the Banting-Best research centre at Toronto from 1929 until his death in 1978 | |
