Aesculapius,Roman god. Carving of Aesculapius (left),the Roman god of healing and medicine,originally Asclepius in Greek mythology. He was the son of Apollo and was taught surgery and the use of drugs by Chiron the centaur (a mythical beast that was part human and part horse). Aesculapius was killed by a thunderbolt from Zeus (leader of the gods) for violating the natural order,when he brought the dead back to life.
