Peter Armbruster. Portrait of Professor Peter Armbruster,German discoverer of new chemical elements. On the blackboard are particle physics equations used in the discovery of Element 112 on 9 February 1996. Armbruster headed the group at the Heavy Ion Research (GSI) centre at Darmstadt in Germany which synthesised elements 107 to 112,the six heaviest known, during 1981-96. They were made artificially by colliding atomic nuclei together at high speeds using the UNILAC particle accelerator; they also created unusual forms (isotopes) of familiar elements. These elements & isotopes allow studies of the forces that bind nuclei together. Photographed in 1997 | |
