Dr Charles Alcock (right) with members of the MACHO search team. Alcock led the team that announced a microlensing event by a MACHO (massive compact halo object) in September 1993. MACHOs are thought to be brown dwarf stars in the halo of galaxies, and could help account for the 'missing' dark matter of the universe. Alcock's team detected such an object by recording the images of about two million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) every night over many months, looking for gravitational lensing of an LMC star by a passing MACHO.
