| Professors Stanley Pons (at back,b.1943) and Martin Fleischmann (b.1927),the co-discoverers of 'cold fusion'. Announced in 1989,cold fusion caused a storm in the science world. The process involves the electrolysis of heavy (deuterated) water in a cell with a platinum anode and palladium cathode. The deuterium ions are driven into the lattice of the palladium,allegedly causing nuclear fusion and the release of considerable energy.
