Group portrait of the scientists who participated in the second Solvay international conference of physics in 1913. The Belgian chemist Ernest Solvay (1838- 1922) is probably best remembered for financing the Solvay international conferences of physics, chemistry and sociolology which were periodically held in Brussels. Most of the new ideas of quantum physics, atomic models and cosmology were developed in the physics conferences. The best known scientists recognisable here include: a young Albert Einstein (centre, standing),Marie Curie (centre left, standing) and Sir Ernest Rutherford (second from left, seated) | |
