Hahn and Meitner,German chemists, working in the laboratory. Otto Hahn (1879-1968,at left) and Lise Meitner (1878-1968) worked together in Berlin for nearly 30 years. Despite her talent Meitner faced prejudice as a woman and a Jew. In the 1930s they worked on uranium bombarded with neutrons initially not realising that fission was occurring. In the late 1930s with the rise of Nazi Germany,Meitner left for Sweden where she built up her research group. In 1939 Hahn in Germany and,a month later,Meitner in Sweden announced that they had obtained nuclear fission for the first time. Hahn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1944 | |
