Facial reconstruction. Image 7 of 7. Partially and fully reconstructed faces. Facial reconstructions are carried out when human remains require identification. Modelling clay is placed over a plaster cast of the skull. Pegs placed in the cast correspond to the depth of the facial muscles. These provide a guide to the forensic scientist when building up the muscle layers with modelling clay. The aim is to provide a likeness of the victim, which might allow them to be identified from missing persons records for example.
