Fingerprint scanning. Computer graphic of a fingerprint scan (blue) being analysed. The scan was obtained from a finger placed on an infrared scanner. The computer then locates all the features on the image that together make the fingerprint unique. Each feature's distance and angle (yellow) from a central point on the tip of the finger is calculated and this information is stored on the image. Future finger scans can be compared with the features on the original image to provide a verification of identity, protecting access to bank accounts for example.
