Fingerprint scanning. View of a finger being scanned to reveal its fingerprint pattern. The finger is pressed against a scanner which reads the pattern using an infrared beam (seen here as a red light). The computer fingerprint image (blue) is then analysed to find the features (yellow & red dots) that together make it unique. Each feature's position from a central point on the tip of the finger is calculated and stored on the image. Future finger scans can be compared with the features on the original image to provide a verification of identity, protecting access to bank accounts for example.
