Architectural restoration. Restorer working on a piece of marble from the dome of the Chapel of the Holy Shroud in Turin,Italy. This chapel, built from 1668 to 1694,houses the famous Turin Shroud, said to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ. Restoration work, which has been taking place since 1990,has involved testing the quality of the stone used, and polishing and cleaning the stone. Where poor quality or damaged stone is discovered, repairs are carried out. Here, the stone is being injected with a resin to strengthen it. The restoration work was interrupted in 1997 when the chapel and its dome were badly damaged by a fire |
