Jute fibre, light micrograph. Jute is a fibre taken from the bast (inner bark or skin) of the plant Corchorus capsularis and is mainly composed of cellulose (plant fibre) and lignin (wood fibre). The long, shiny fibres are used to make a textile called hessian or burlap. The strands are coarse but very strong and thus are ideal as inexpensive sacks and packaging.
