Mammalian cell. Colour transmission electron micrograph of a single mammalian tissue culture cell. Taking up most of the cell is the nucleus (red, round),where genes are stored in the form of chromosomes. The orange area in the nucleus is the nucleolus. This is the most active part of the nucleus, and contains unravelled chromosomes involved in making protein-manufacturing bodies called ribosomes. Outside the nucleus is the cell cytoplasm (blue). It contains a mixture of cell orangelles including mitochondria that supply the cell with energy. Magnification x300 at 6x6cm size | |
