False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a hybridoma cell producing a monoclonal antibody to cytoskeleton protein. Monoclonal antibodies are produced by injecting a mouse with an antigen & harvesting its antibody response by removing the B lymphocytes. These are fused with tumour cells from a mutant lymphocyte source. The fusion prod- uct is called a hybridoma cell. B lymphocytes are short-lived; when fused with tumour cells, which divide indefinitely, the production of antibody is secured. Hybridomas are screened for the required antibody. Once isolated,it is cloned & produces one type of antibody. Magnification: x3000 at 6x7cm size,x10,500 at 8x10-inch size | |
