Brown pelican research. US Fish & Wildlife Service worker banding a brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis). Banding is used to identify individual animals over time to track animal population levels and movements. Brown pelicans almost became extinct in some parts of the USA due to use of the pesticide DDT. Since DDT was banned in 1972,pelican numbers have recovered.
