Great White shark research. Researcher tagging an acoustic transmitter to a Great White shark (Carcharodon carcharias). The researchers attract Great White sharks to their boat using whale blubber and sardine bait. When the sharks approach near enough, they are tagged with a battery operated transmitter onto the dorsal fin using a dart at the end of a long pole. This enables the researchers to track the sharks movements and behaviour. The Great White is the largest of the predatory sharks, reaching a length of over 6 metres. They feed mainly on seals, turtles and fish. Attacks on humans are rare and more likely due to mistaken identity. Photographed in False Bay,Cape Town,South Africa | |
