MODEL RELEASED. Honeybee brain research. Researcher feeding a honeybee (Apis mellifera, centre). The bee is being trained to associate food with a floral odour. The honeybee's small brain (fewer than one million nerve cells) is used as a model system for research into behaviour, particularly that associated with learning and memory. Researchers here are using the bee's ability to learn and remember floral cues, such as colour, shape and odour, when coupled with food rewards to study the underlying neural mechanisms of learning and memory.
