Genetic variation research. Scientists studying DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequences of European and Africanised honey bees. Africanised honey bees are hybrids of the African honey bee (Apis mellifera scutellata) and European honey bee species, such as Apis mellifera ligustica and Apis mellifera iberiensis. They are the result of the accidental release of Tanzanian bees in Brazil in 1957. The Africanised bees are replacing the European, but are hard to distinguish visually. By looking at the genetic sequences, the differences between the bees can be identified. This research was performed for the United States Department of Agriculture | |
