MODEL RELEASED. Influenza research. Scientist drilling holes into fertilised chicken eggs. The eggs will be injected with samples of influenza viruses that have been recently circulating in the population. The chicken eggs are used as a large number of the viruses are needed and viruses can only replicate within host cells. Once a sufficient concentration has been reached the samples will be able to be tested to determine their strains. The strains that are most prevalent in the population will used in the flu vaccine for the next season.
