Influenza research. Close-up of a multipipette adding turkey blood cells to samples of influenza viruses of unknown strains. These are samples of viruses that have been recently circulating in the population. The blood cells are being added as a large number of the viruses are needed and viruses can only replicate within host cells. Once a sufficient concentration has been reached the samples will be able to be tested to determine their strains. The strains that are most prevalent in the population will be used in the flu vaccine for the next season.
