Cloned calf. Second Chance (right),the first calf to be cloned form an adult male, next to its surrogate mother. Second chance was cloned from a 21 year old Brahman bull called Chance. To clone a cow an oocyte is taken from a female and its nuclear material is removed. Genetic material is taken from a body (somatic) cell of the animal to be cloned and injected into the empty nucleus. The resulting cloned oocyte is grown to the embryo stage and then implanted in a foster cow's uterus. It took 189 attempts to clone Chance. Photographed at Texas A&M University,USA,in 1999 | |
