Plant polymer research. Scientist examines a sample of a polymer chemical derived from a plant during research into finding replacements for polymers derived from mineral resources. The cell walls of plants contain a number of polymers which can be chemically modified to make useful products. Of particular use are hemicellulose (polysacchar- ide) polymers which contain many reactive hydroxyl groups. These groups provide a molecular frame on which novel polymers can be made. Products made from modified plant polymers include drug capsules, adhesives, and plastics. Photographed at the BioComposites Centre in Bangor,Great Britain | |
