Grapevine culture. Biotechnology technician checks a young cloned grapevine plant growing in culture in a laboratory. Racks of test tubes containing these genetic plant clones are seen growing under illuminated conditions. A layer of jelly in the bottom of each tube is a sterile soil-substitute containing the nutrients needed by the growing plant. These plants are grown from tiny fragments,or single cells,of an experimental "parent" plant. The parent plant has been genetically engineered for a useful trait such as fungal resistance.
