Molecular farming: plants that produce a human protein. Flowers of a transgenic oil-seed rape plant Brassica napus being cultured in a green- house at the Biocem company at Clermont-Ferrand,France. After the seeds are germinated in the laboratory,the young plants are put into pots and raised under experimental conditions. Grown traditionally for its oil,Brassica napus is naturally a high producer of protein. Recombining human genes into its DNA,this plant may produce such human proteins as blood albumin and gastric lipase. These proteins may be used to treat people with hereditary and other protein disorders
