Genetically engineered tomatoes. Tin can of tomato puree whose label states that it has been made from genetically-engineered plants. Tomato plants may be genetically-engineered to improve the flavour and shelf-life of their fruit. This is done by altering the plants' DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA contains the genetic code which deter- mines the plants' characteristics. By slightly changing the code, the characteristics can be modified. The first genetically-engineered food was the tomato Flavr Savr, designed to ripen on the vine, and to be resistant to spoilage after harvest. It was first sold in 1994 | |
