Genetically engineered beer. Professor Bernard Atkinson drinks a glass of the first genetically engineered beer "Nutfield Lyte". In the background is the laboratory in which the yeast used to make this beer was engineered. Prof. Atkinson is director of BRF International, the Brewing Research Foundation responsible for developing this beer. Genetically engineered strains of Brewer's yeast are produced to enhance brewing efficiency, change the flavour of the beer (in both sugar and alcohol content),and to cut the costs of production. "Nutfield Lyte" is said to taste like most premium lagers. BRF International is based in Nutfield in Surrey,England | |
