Tuberculosis vaccine research. Petri dish with a culture of genetically modified tuberculosis bacteria for vaccine research. These bacteria were modified to produce antigens that could provide resistance to tuberculosis. These antigens could be injected as a vaccine. Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The most common site of infection is the lungs, where it can cause severe scarring. A major problem is the development of strains resistant to antibiotics, requiring research to find new drugs and vaccines. Photographed in the Pedro Kouri Institute,Havana,Cuba,in 2002 | |
