Antigen cryostorage. Technician's gloved hands removing a canister of concentrated inactive antigen from cryostorage in liquid nitrogen. Antigens are foreign particles which trigger the production of antibodies by the immune system. Various samples of antigen from outbreaks of foot- and-mouth disease,a contagious viral disease of cattle, are in storage. When a fresh outbreak of the disease occurs, the appropriate antigens are used to make a vaccine. Cryostorage (cold storage) enables the samples to be stored for long periods without them deteriorating.
